Silent Movie
Filmed back in 2002 in Lugoff, South Carolina. All I had for the shoot was my analog video camera, tv, vcr, and a cd player. With these powers combined, I knew my editing would either have to be very meticulous, or nonexistant. I opted for the latter. I produced a second-by-second cinematograpy for the soundtrack, Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 by Franz Liszt, and then shot the film, audibly counting off the seconds until the end of each shot (its a silent film - the audio was dubbed out). I knew I needed some way to make the recording look a little fuzzy and unfocused to mimic as best I could the vintage appearance of the film, so I covered the video camera lens with about 5 or 6 layers of seran wrap, and the result was acceptable. I couldn't figure out how to make decent caption shots, so we ended up just hand-writing the captions of 3x5 flash cards. Once the shooting was done, all that was left was to directly dub the soundtrack onto the video feed in real time and watch it all fall together. Later on, in 2008, after acquiring significantly better editing equipment, namely a MacBook complete with iMovie software, I was able to digitalize the film and add the scratchy vintage film effect.
